Currents | Like Moths To Flames | Foreign Hands | Bottom Lounge | Chicago, IL 05/17/23

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

On a lovely spring evening in Chicago, fans waited in line outside the Bottom Lounge for this sold-out event. Already in week two of a 24-city tour that began in Worcester, MA and ends in Granby, QC, the tour has sold out numerous shows. Currents hit the road with a killer lineup that included Invent Animate (limited dates), Like Moths to Flames, Unity TX (limited dates), and Foreign Hands for the band’s first headliner tour and a new album release on May 5th (The Death We Seek). This was going to be an exciting night full of amazing music, and we were lucky enough to be there to enjoy it.

Foreign Hands approached the stage with their opening song “Tearing Down Your Reality” as fans began to fill an already crowded floor, and the show was off and running. It wasn’t going to be difficult to get the audience involved with this one. With a slew of crowd surfers and moshers, this event got off to a rousing start. The crowd truly broke loose during their third song, “Laceration Wings.” The packed house converted the floor into a massive mosh pit. Any unwary audience member would undoubtedly be lured into this one. Playing a blazing 8-song set that includes “A Cardiac Winter”, “Hesitation Marks”, “Chlorine Tears”, “Anemoia”, and “Separation Souvenir”. The audience was obviously pumped for Like Moths to Flames.

The boys from Ohio, LMTF, who are no strangers to the metalcore scene, were ready to be savage. LMTF sucked the crowd right in with “Ameliorate” as the opener. Lead vocalist Chris Roetter went onto the stage riser and yelled, “Let’s fucking go Chicago!!” The fans replied by sending plenty of crowd surfers, and the floor opened up again with a massive mosh pit. During the set, crowd surfers were tossed around like rag dolls, and the pit raged throughout. LMTF performed a harsh nine-song set that included new releases “Predestination Paradox” and “I Found the Darkside of Heaven”, both songs which were

released within the last month. Other songs included in this set list were, “Habitual Decline”, “I Solemnly Swear”, “Serpent Herders”, “The Preservation of Hate”, “Spiritual Eclipse”, and “Bury Your Pain”. The guys from LMTF definitely gave the crowd everything they had.

With a brief intermission, Currents was ready to take the stage to give the fans the most brutal set of the night. Opening up with “The Death We Seek” off their recent new album, the tireless crowd jumped right back into it. During the next 2 songs “Monsters” and “Better Days”, crowd surfing had reached its maximum, bodies were flying over the barricade, front row fans were singing along, security was amped up a bit in response to the amount of crowd surfers. Brain Wiley , lead singer of Currents was seen with a huge smile during all of this. The guys from Currents have come a long way in the past 12 years. With multiple lineup changes that have given us the “sweet spot” which we enjoy today. Following a band like this for the last 7 years, it’s awesome to see them headline their first tour, and the amount of crowd reaction during the new songs is what is really amazing. For an album that’s only been out a little over 2 weeks, it seemed like it was an old school album watching the crowd sing to it. Fans went hard the entire set, crowd surfing and moshing never stopped, even during the slowed down songs. This was definitely one stacked 14 song set list. Songs included were “Into Despair”, “Shattered”, “Kill the Ache”, “So Alone (new)”, “Unfamiliar (new)”, “Forever Marked”, “The Place I Feel Safest”, “Remember Me (new)”, “Living in Tragedy (new)”, “Gone Astray(new)”, and “Apnea”. Currents have definitely put themselves on the map the last few years, now with a headlining tour selling out multiple dates, if you

don’t have tickets, you better get them quick. Because you're going to be left out of one hell of a tour.
